The margins were between 4 and 10 percentage points, with a survey sampling error of between 4.4 and 4.8 points per state. The only state where voters said they would choose Biden over Trump was Wisconsin, where the president led the Republican front-runner by 2 points, within the margin of error. During the 2020 election, Biden won all six of these battleground states, albeit some by very slim margins. These issues will be top of mind for voters next year; 57% of respondents said economic issues would be the most important factor in their vote. The survey points to troubling signs ahead for the Biden reelection campaign.

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew testifies before a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing on his nomination to be the next U.S. ambassador to Israel, on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C., on Oct. 18, 2023. WASHINGTON — Former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew was confirmed by the Senate Tuesday to serve as President Joe Biden's ambassador to Israel at a critical time for the enduring U.S.-Israel alliance. Lew, 68, served as treasury secretary in the Obama administration, and as White House budget director in two Democratic administrations. A surprise attack by Hamas Oct. 7 left more than 1,400 people dead in Israel, nearly all of them civilians. The United States has been without a Senate-confirmed ambassador to Israel since July, when Tom Nides departed the post.

President Joe Biden speaks during an event on the economy, from the South Court Auditorium of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House complex, Monday, Oct. 23, 2023. WASHINGTON — The U.S. GDP grew at 5% last quarter, better than expected, and President Joe Biden said it was evidence that his economic policies are working. The number beat Wall Street expectations and marked the biggest quarterly GDP gain since late 2021. For months, Biden has traveled the country giving speeches on his economic agenda, dubbed "Bidenomics," and the booming economy. Yet polling shows Americans overall are still uncertain that the economy is truly strong, and voters still favor Republicans on economic issues.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden Wednesday stressed the United States believes the conflict between Israel and Hamas must end with a vision of a "two-state solution." "It also means, when this crisis is over there has to be a vision of what comes next, and, in our view, it has to be a two-state solution." Achieving this, Biden said, means "a concentrated effort for all the parties — Israelis, Palestinians, regional partners, global leaders — to put us on a path toward peace." Biden spoke in the White House Rose Garden, standing beside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at a press conference after their bilateral meeting Wednesday afternoon, and ahead of a state dinner.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden lauded Thursday's Labor Department report showing relatively stable inflation, taking credit for a recent spate of positive economic news. The consumer price index, a key inflation gauge, increased 0.4% in September and 3.7% compared to a year ago. Republicans consistently poll better than Democrats on dealing with economic issues, a hurdle Biden is trying to overcome as the 2024 election looms. "This morning's report shows core inflation fell to its lowest level in two years," Biden said in a statement Thursday. The president hailed the recent economic numbers as "Bidenomics in action."

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis went on the attack against Donald Trump in an interview with CNBC's "Squawk Box," saying the former president would be a "lame duck" if elected for a second term. "He would be a lame duck on day one if he could even get elected. He said that Trump failed to "drain the swamp" — a reference to official Washington institutions — and make Mexico pay for a border wall. DeSantis also noted that Trump, instead of cutting the national debt, increased it by $7.8 trillion. "We're going to be able to make that case right and I've delivered on these policies better than anybody," DeSantis said.

U.S. President Joe Biden speaks with border patrol officers as he walks along the border fence during his visit to the U.S.-Mexico border to assess border enforcement operations, in El Paso, Texas, on Jan. 8, 2023. WASHINGTON — The Biden administration waived 26 federal laws in South Texas to greenlight the construction of approximately 20 additional miles of the U.S.-Mexico border wall in the Rio Grande Valley. The continuation of border wall construction, which was announced in late June, is a major policy pivot for the Biden administration. During his 2020 campaign, President Joe Biden promised not "another foot of wall" would be built under his administration. NBC News released a poll last week that found the majority of Americans say Republicans do a better job addressing border security.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told his Republican caucus members he will bring a motion that seeks to oust him to a vote Tuesday afternoon, two GOP lawmakers told NBC News. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., a longtime foe of McCarthy's, on Monday night filed a motion to vacate targeting the speaker's position. Gaetz has been threatening McCarthy with a motion to vacate since he worked with Democrats on a debt ceiling deal in the spring. McCarthy told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Tuesday morning that Gaetz has "personal things in his life that he has challenges with." In January, as a condition to secure enough votes to become speaker, McCarthy agreed to change the rules to lower the threshold needed to bring a motion to oust a speaker from five votes to just one.

U.S. President Joe Biden holds a Cabinet meeting at the White House on October 02, 2023 in Washington, DC. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden convened a call with top U.S. allies Tuesday to stress the United States commitment to aiding Ukraine as hard-line House Republicans push back on further support for that embattled nation. Biden spoke with the leaders of the G7 countries, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the European Commission and the European Council to coordinate support for Ukraine. Despite bipartisan support in the Senate, a handful of hard-line Republicans in the House have rejected any additional aid. On Saturday, Biden signed a stopgap funding measure passed by Congress to avoid a shutdown of the federal government.

WASHINGTON — Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin called on the Supreme Court to create a code of conduct as its new term begins Monday. Durbin for about a dozen years has, without success, asked the Supreme Court to adopt an enforceable code of conduct. Supreme Court justices are the only federal judges who are exempt from the official ethics rules. The Supreme Court has been under scrutiny this year because of media reports about justices receiving luxury travel, gifts, and other benefits. Durbin earlier this year asked Chief Justice John Roberts to appear before the Judiciary Committee to discuss Supreme Court ethics after the articles were first published.

The suspicion is that Biden agreed to sign a stop-gap federal government funding deal that did not include Ukraine aid he wanted to provide, in exchange for McCarthy agreeing to hold a standalone vote on that aid later. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., demanded during an angry speech Monday targeting his fellow Republican McCarthy on the House floor. McCarthy on Monday denied that there was a secret plan for Ukraine funding. "There's an overwhelming number of Republicans and Democrats in both the House and the Senate who support Ukraine," Biden said at the White House. A standalone vote on emergency Ukraine funding would likely pass the House, but only with the help of Democratic votes.

President Joe Biden is set to deliver a speech Thursday in Phoenix, Arizona, on the state of democracy and to honor his late friend, Republican Sen. John McCain. It is the fourth such speech on democracy Biden has made during his presidency, the first of which was delivered on the first anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Biden is set to say that McCain was representative of the old guard of Republicans and was willing to put his country over his party. The friendship continued after McCain lost the 2008 presidential contest to Barack Obama, whose vice president was Biden.
